Yes, you should absolutely pack bug spray for Jamaica.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d put it at a 10, right beside sunscreen as one of the few things you don’t want to forget.
You’ll find that you may not need it every day, especially if you’re staying mostly inside an air-conditioned resort. But after rain, near rivers and waterfalls, around heavy vegetation, or outside at dusk, you’ll be glad you brought it.
That said, bug spray doesn’t protect you from every insect you’ll see on the island. Before choosing what to pack, it helps to know which Jamaican bugs you’re actually trying to avoid, so you stay safe in Jamaica,
What Bug Spray Actually Helps With
Jamaica is a tropical island, so yes, we have bugs, insects, and everything in between.
However, bug spray is mainly for the insects that bite.
In Jamaica, that usually means:
- mosquitoes (see my detailed guide on them)
- sand flies
- other small biting insects
What surprises many first-time visitors is that bug spray won’t help much with the insects that usually make people panic.
It won’t do much against:
- flying roaches
- moths
- beetles
- ants
- most insects attracted to lights at night
Those bugs may look scary or annoying, but repellent is mainly for the insects that bite, not every insect that flies, crawls, or shows up around a light.
The Times and Places You’ll Definitely Want Bug Spray
You probably won’t need bug spray every minute of your vacation.
However, you’ll find yourself wanting spray:
- after rain
- around dusk
- near rivers and waterfalls
- in rural or heavily vegetated areas
- at eco-resorts or nature-style properties
That’s the thing with bug spray in Jamaica. You may not need it constantly, but when you do need it, you really need it.
Do Resorts in Jamaica Have Bugs?
Bugs are everywhere, and your fancy resort is no exception.
Many Jamaican resorts do a good job managing mosquito populations, and if you’re spending most of your time indoors, around pools, or on well-maintained grounds, you may barely notice them.
But not every resort is the same. Properties surrounded by gardens, mangroves, hillsides, or natural landscapes often have more mosquitoes than large, concrete-heavy resorts.
Forgot Bug Spray? You Have Options in Jamaica
If you forgot your bug spray, don’t panic. You can buy it in Jamaica.
You’ll usually find insect repellent at:
- Supermarkets
- Pharmacies
- Convenience stores
- Resort gift shops
Many of the major brands you’re used to are available, but one local option I like is Vape. It’s affordable, easy to find, and in my experience, it does a good job keeping mosquitoes away.
If you see it in a supermarket or pharmacy, it’s worth picking up as a backup.
That said, bug spray isn’t the only way people deal with mosquitoes in Jamaica.
Common options include:
- Bug spray and insect repellents
- Mosquito coils
- Electric zapper rackets
- Keeping doors and windows closed around dusk
Mosquito coils are still popular, although I’m not a huge fan of sitting in the smoke. Zapper rackets, on the other hand, are surprisingly effective and, if we’re being honest, pretty satisfying to use.
